3-D Oyster Reef Funding Partners

Design Phase-

The design phase of this project was funded by a $4,500 District Grant from Rotary International District 7620 (Central Maryland and Washington, D.C.), as well as the following cash contributions from the following Rotary clubs and individual Rotarians:

Leonardtown Rotary$1,500
Lexington Park Rotary$1,500
College Park Rotary$1,500
Annapolis Rotary$1,000
Annapolis Evening Rotary$ 500
Annapolis Yacht Club$ 250
Rockville Rotary$ 250
Capital Hill Rotary$ 250
Glen Burnie Rotary$ 250
Rotarian James Wolfe$ 250
Rotarian David Elberti$ 100
Rotarian Saber Halal$ 25

The Rotary Club of Leonardtown is responsible for the management of the design phase grant. Special thanks to District Governor Bob Parkinson, a member of the Lexington Park club and District Environmental Committee Chairman Dr. Christopher Puttock, a member of the of the College Park club, both of whom have assisted the Leonardtown project management team with the development of the project, as well as have spent many hours visiting Rotary Clubs throughout the District soliciting their support for the project.

Construction Phase 1, Pilot Project

To provide some of the funding for the first phase of the construction of the demonstration reef, the Rotary Club of Leonardtown applied for a District Grant from RI District 7620. The Leonardtown Club is pleased to report that the District Grant Committee recently announced that the Leonardtown Club has been awarded a $4,500 District Grant for FY 2012-13 for the 0.5 acre first phase of the $34,000 construction project. To provide for the rest of the Phase 1 construction project funding, Rotarians will be visiting Rotary Clubs throughout the District over the next several months to ask for additional support. Rotarians and St. Mary's River Watershed Association representatives will also be seeking financial support from the general public, as well as in-kind donations of labor, construction materials and equipment to reduce the overall cost of the project. As an example, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation recently donated the use of molds and personnel to teach Rotarian and non-Rotarian volunteers how to construct the concrete reef balls that will be used to construct half of the demonstration reef. As a result of CBF's generosity and efforts by Rotarian Christopher Puttock of the Rotary Club of College Park to organize volunteer reef ball makers, all 90 of the reef balls that will be needed for Phase 1 have been constructed for only the cost of materials. If transporting and deploying the newly made reef balls can also be accomplished by volunteer support, and if a substantial portion of the recycled concrete portion of the project can be constructed with additional in-kind contributions and material donations, the total cost of Phase 1 will be greatly reduced. To learn more about the Rotary volunteer reef ball building effort, check out District 7620's Facebook Page.
